Shirley Smith passed away March 1, 2017, at her home in Nevada at the age of 81.

Shirley Mae Beard was born on June 30, 1935, in Maxwell, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Carl and Alice (Kitchen) Beard. She graduated from Maxwell High School in 1953. 

Shirley married Richard Lee Smith on June 1, 1958, in Ames, Iowa. Three children were born to their union:  Michael, Michelle, and Pamela. 

Shirley was employed at 3M in Ames for 22 years. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery. Her greatest joys came from being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She and Richard were married for 45 years. 

Survivors include her daughter, Michelle Dodd of Nevada and her sons Spencer and Cooper and their dad, Barry Dodd; a granddaughter, Amber (Mike) Miller of Nevada and their children Savannah, Brayden and Emma; a grandson, Cole Smith of Nevada; and daughter-in-law, Brenda Smith. Also surviving are one sister, Paulette (Noland) Eidsmoe of Arizona; two brothers, Carl (Ruth) Beard of Texas, and Chuck (Pat) Beard of Colorado; a brother-in-law, Art Smith of Nevada; and several nieces and nephews. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter Pam and son, Mike; and two sisters, Joyce Smith and Patricia Weber. 

Per her wishes cremation has taken place with private burial at a later date. Please join us for a celebration of her life on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at 11:30 a.m. at the Nevada Senior Community Center at 1231 6th Street, Nevada, Iowa.

“I was so sorry to hear about moms passing. I had no idea until today 3-13-17. Shirley was a wonderful lady and I will miss her a lot. Driving by the house won't feel the same anymore.
