Michael R. Smith, age 70, of Collins, Iowa, went home to his heavenly father on Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa.
Visitation will held at Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017. A luncheon will follow at Living Water Fellowship Church, 1325 8th Street, in Nevada. Private graveside committal services will be held at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery in Collins, with military honors by Freeland Carver Post #81 of the American Legion.
Born September 28, 1947, in Ames, Iowa, Michael Ray Smith was the son of Lawrence and Helen (Wood) Smith. He was a proud veteran, serving in the United States Army for 11 years and in the Army Reserves for another 11 years. Mike was employed at Sauer-Danfoss in Ames, retiring after 30 years of service. He was united in marriage to Billie (Wyatt) Bartmess on May 5, 1973, in Collins. The couple enjoyed nearly 45 years together.
Mike loved casino slot machines, lottery scratchers, and fishing, but his greatest joy was found in the company of his family.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Billie; his mother, Helen Earles of Collins; his siblings, Diana (Allen) Stokesbary of Nevada, Bob Raines of Collins, Russ (Peggie) Raines of Collins, and Sheila (Anthony) Cantrell of Nevada; as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Michael and his family. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Mike’s memory may be directed to the family.
