Born February 3, 1929, south of Nevada, Evelyn Marie Smith was the daughter of James and Marguerite (Heintz) Fitzgerald.  She attended school in Garden Grove and Nevada, graduating from Nevada High School.

On October 16, 1957, Evelyn was united in marriage to Richard Dean Smith in Sioux City, Iowa.  The couple made their home in Sioux City for several years, then returned to Nevada where they raised their six children and lived the remainder of their lives.

Evelyn was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada.  She was an excellent baker and each Christmas shared her delicious homemade cinnamon rolls with family and friends.  She also enjoyed playing cards and embroidery, as well as the company of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Her wonderful sense of humor will long be remembered.

Survivors include six children, William (Marilyn) Fulkerson of Ankeny, Stephen (Marla) Fulkerson of Prior Lake, MN, Kathy (John) Koebel of Sioux City, Charles (Sheila) Smith of Nevada, Sue (Mike) Sarnecki of West Des Moines, Cher (Bill) McBride of Nevada; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 1996; her parents; and two brothers, Don and Bob Fitzgerald.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Evelyn and her family.

“Prayers and thoughts to Evelyn's family. She was such a great worker at Nevada Middle School in foodservice. She was always a happy person and a joy to see everyday! Her wit and laugh was great for the workers and kids! I will keep Evelyn in my prayers so that she looks down upon us to help us through our day and life! May she rest in peace!”

“My deepest condolences. I always enjoyed Evelyn so much. She would always say something that made me smile. I cannot remember a time when I didn't know her and I think about what a wonderful mother she was and her great family. I hope all of your memories will soften the grief.”
