Delbert Lowe, age 88, of Nevada, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at Rolling Green Village in Nevada.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada, with Pastor Russ Burnett officiating. Burial will follow in the Maxwell Cemetery, with military honors conducted by American Legion Post #37 of Ames. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 5-7 p.m.
Born April 25, 1930, at home in Maxwell, Iowa, Delbert Eugene Lowe was the son of Dillard L. and Bessie Marie (Whited) Lowe, Sr. Delbert graduated from Maxwell High School in 1949, and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-53.
On November 4, 1951, Delbert married Emma Ilene Dunahoo at Iowa Center, Iowa. The couple was blessed with four sons, Michael, Kevin, Randy, and Rick. Delbert was employed in several capacities over the years, including as a farmer near Maxwell, as parts manager at Mathison Ford, and as sexton of the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. He retired in 1992.
Delbert was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Nevada and Moose Lodge #520 of Ames. He participated in American Legion Post No. 37 in Ames and 40/8 Voiture #285 of Story County, and was a 20-year volunteer firefighter and assistant fire chief of the Nevada Fire Department. Delbert loved to reminisce about his service as a firefighter, was an avid collector of bicycles, hats, and other treasures, enjoyed gardening, and made many happy memories camping throughout the Midwest with his family.
Survivors include his son, Rick (Renae) Lowe of Story City; three grandchildren, Dakota Lowe, Nick Lowe, and Paxton Sudbeck; two brothers, Elbert Lowe, and Bob (Marilyn) Lowe, all of Nevada; as well as nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his wife Emma in 2006; three sons, Michael in 1954, Kevin in 1988, and Randy in 1961; his parents; two brothers, Dillard Lowe, Jr., and Wayne Lowe; and an infant sister, Zelda Lowe.
Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Delbert and his family.
