Janet Severin, age 84, of Nevada, Iowa, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa.
Funeral services were held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada with Pastor Myron Herzberg officiating. Burial was in the Nevada Municipal Cemetery. Visitation was held at the church on Saturday from 1-3 p.m.
Born January 6, 1930, in Des Moines County, Iowa, Janet Louise Severin was the daughter of Tom Merrit and Emma Agnes (Martin) Evans. She grew up in Burlington, Iowa, graduated from Burlington High School, then earned her teaching certificate from Burlington Jr. College. Janet taught elementary school at Belle Plaine and McCallsburg and was later employed at Hertz Farm Management in Nevada for over 25 years.
On August 5, 1951, she married William Ray Severin at Grace Methodist Church in Burlington. The couple made their home in Nevada where they raised three daughters, Peggy, Paula, and Pam. Most recently, Janet made her home at Rolling Green Village in Nevada. She delighted in the company of the other residents and was unofficially designated as social director of activities.
Janet was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church and P.E.O. She enjoyed playing bridge, crossword puzzles, and trivia games. Janet had the heart of a teacher and will be remembered for her energetic, sweet, and fun-loving nature and for the sincere interest she took in those who surrounded her.
Survivors include her daughters, Peggy (JR) Christensen of Palm Springs, CA, Paula (Jim) Atkinson of Nevada, and Pam (Jeff) Boylan of Coppell, TX; nine grandchildren, Kelly, Kory, and Kasey Christensen, Amy and Stacie Atkinson, Troy and Drew Hanson, and Laura and Will Boylan; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Gerry) Evans of Yreka, CA; a sister, Kathryn (Dave) Wyss of Mediapolis; as well as extended family members and a host of friends.
Janet was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and a brother, Robert Evans.
Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada was entrusted with the care of Janet and her family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada.
