From: Eldora, IA

Nissen Kurt Haas, age 83, of Eldora, Iowa, died Friday, January 2, 2015, at the Eldora Nursing & Rehab Center.  Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015, at Nevada Municipal Cemetery, with Vicar Nat Bothwell officiating.  Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion.

Nissen Kurt Haas was born February 5, 1931, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Melvin and Mabel (Nissen) Haas.  He grew up and received his education in Ames, graduating from Ames High School in 1949.

Kurt married Nancy McAtee on December 11, 1950, then served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  He and Nancy made their home in Corning, California, for several years where Kurt owned and operated a service station.  He received training in autobody repair and returned to Iowa and taught it at the State Training School in Eldora, Davenport, and later in West Bend, WI.  He eventually returned to Eldora and again taught autobody repair until opening his own shop, Eldora Autobody Repair, which he operated until his retirement.

In earlier years, Kurt enjoyed fishing, ham radios, trains, and flying RC planes.  He had a special place in his heart for animals, especially cats.

He is survived by two children, Amy (Brian) Haas-Gray, and Allen (Rosanne) Haas, all of Eldora; and four grandchildren, Jeffrey, Austin, Alexis, and Kurt.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 2007; his parents; and a brother, Christian Haas.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Kurt and his family.

“I realize that this note of condolence is coming long after Kurt's passing. Please accept my prayers and sympathies for Kurt's passing. Sadly, my mother Donna Ray died very recently after several months of declining health. She spoke with much love about the good memories she had of living side by side with Kurt and Nancy as my father Marion Ray and Kurt served in the Army. She was heartbroken when Nancy died and I know would have been just as heartbroken about Kurt's passing. Sincerely, Brenda Ray Scott (Donna's daughter)”

“I want to extend my sincere sympathy to you. I used to live in Eldora and Kurt worked at the shop I used to be at doing bookwork (Eischen Body Shop) and I really thought a lot of him. He was always very kind and we had many good conversations. Think heaven has got another good one and I'm glad I was able to get to know him in this life. With sincere sympathy and prayers.
