John was born March 10, 1938, in Nevada to Howard and Althea (Keith) Pierce.  He graduated from Nevada High School in 1956.  John held various jobs with the Iowa Department of Transportation, ranging from the road and survey crew to retiring as a Systems Analyst in their programming department.

John was a member of the Iowa National Guard.  While raising his family and living in Nevada, John belonged to the Nevada Jaycees and many church organizations at Memorial Lutheran Church.  After moving to Madrid he was a very active member of the Trees Forever program, the Madrid Library Board and the SAM Center (Senior Associates of Madrid).

John enjoyed the outdoors, watching the birds and hunting.  Fishing at Ten Mile Lake in northern Minnesota was something the family did every summer.  John enjoyed watching Iowa Public Television and reading.  He loved the state of Iowa and took many road trips to all parts of the state, enjoying its beauty.  He played cribbage every chance he got.  He adored his grandchildren and spoiled them rotten.  And, he enjoyed his Casey’s coffee.

John is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kristi and Mark Coughenour of Maxwell, his son, Keith Pierce of Colo; three grandchildren, T.J. (LoriDee) Coughenour, Amanda (Trevor) Sharp, and Michelle Pierce; his longtime companion, Elaine Shaw and her children, Debbie (Bobby) Chiri of Madrid, Cindy (Tim) Lawlor of Nevada, and Curt Chapman of Washington State, and her grandchildren, Michelle (Rich) and McKenna.  He is also survived by a sister, Anita (Loren) Kuiper of Pella; a brother, Donnie Pierce of DeSoto; the NHS Class of 1956; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy Pierce; and brothers, Steve Pierce, Jack Pierce, and Keith in infancy.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of John and his family.

“Appreciate Bill Koeder keeping us in touch with our classmates even when there is sad news of another loss. Glad we had a chance to be with John and hear him speak at the 50th high school reunion brunch.
It was fun growing up with John and Don in Nevada, and I am pleased to learn what a strong community leader he was as well as a terrific grandparent so he will be long remembered.

“To the Family of John Pierce:
On behalf of the entire Madrid community, I want to offer our condolences to you for your loss. John was a monumental man in our community and did such wonderful things here. I personally worked with John in a variety of capacities and could not have asked for anyone better to have spent time with in that regard. Please find comfort (and pride) in knowing how respected and appreciated he was in Madrid. He will never be replaced, but I hope we find someone new in the community that shares his love of Madrid to help us carry on. - My sympathies, Todd D. Kilzer, Madrid City Administrator/Clerk”

“I am so sorry to hear about John. I worked with him at the DOT for several years and really missed him when he retired. I didn't get to see him very often after he retired but when I did he always brought a smile to my face. He was a wonderful and sweet man and will be missed by many.”
