From: Nevada, IA

Daniel B. Engler, age 69, of Nevada, Iowa, died unexpectedly Thursday, January 28, 2016, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 1, 2016, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada, with The Reverend Fr. Rick Dagit officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Nevada, with military honors by the William F. Ball American Legion Post #48.  Visitation will be held at the church on Sunday from 3-6 p.m., with a Rosary at 5 p.m.

Born March 20, 1946, in Sac City, Iowa, Daniel Bernard Engler was the oldest of nine children born to Bernard William and Evelyn Marguerite (Murphy) Engler.  He was raised on a Century Farm south of Fonda, Iowa, and graduated from Our Lady of Good Council High School in 1964.  Dan earned his bachelor’s degree at South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota, then served as First Lieutenant in the United States Army during the Viet Nam era.

Following his military service, Dan returned to Iowa and was employed at Clarke County State Bank in Osceola.  During this time, he met and, on November 29, 1974, married Marcia Ann Spittler in Clinton, Iowa.  Dan worked in the banking industry in several Iowa communities including Ainsworth, Washington, Sibley, and Holstein.  In 1987, he settled in Nevada where he worked for Nevada National Bank until striking out on his own in 1996 to establish Community Bank in Nevada.  Dan was a well-respected visionary with strong leadership skills and high expectations who surrounded himself with quality people to provide service to the area.  He also had a passion for agriculture, especially the Hampshire and Yorkshire pigs he raised and which took him on travels across the country.

Dan will be remembered as a soft-spoken, humble, and hard-working man who was an excellent role model.  He found great joy in his family, especially his grandchildren, and also supported children of the community through his participation in 4-H and FFA.  He was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Rotary Club of Nevada, VFW, and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Marcia; five children, Ben (Candi) Engler and their children Annabelle and Samuel of Cambridge, Jessica (Scott) McKinley and their children Amazing Grace and Sweet Caroline of Blue Springs, MO, KC (Mark) Nowak and their children Ella Rose of Texas, Andrew Theodore, and Nicholas Daniel of Houston, TX, Liz (Dave) Beagley and their children Evelyn Joy and Lydia Claire of Ames, and Rebecca Engler (Brett Stanford) of Decatur, IL.  He is also survived by two brothers, Tom (Deborah) Engler of Horseshoe Bay, TX, and Timothy Engler of Gordonville, TX; five sisters, Rebecca Webb of Norwalk, Pamela (John) Strathman of Des Moines, Rita (Bob) Leitzinger of Norwalk, Carolyn (Doug) Gordon of Norwalk, and Julie (Earl) Kilgore of Cumming; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, George Engler.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Daniel and his family.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund in Dan’s name has been established at Community Bank, P.O. Box 436, Nevada, IA  50201.

“I send belated condolences to the family of Dan Engler. I was a classmate and lived on the same dorm floor at SDSU. I left SDSU after my freshman year and completed my college in Illinois where I was from. After graduation I got drafted and then sent to Vietnam. I was in my 13th month in Vietnam when my father died and I had to return home. I actually ran in to Dan at he airfield in DaNang. We spoke briefly and then went on our separate ways.. I was trying to locate another SDSU friend when I thought of Dan and found this obituary. As I read it I felt that Dan had a good life and family I was happy to have known him and I actually have pictures of us in the dorm ( Brown Hall) in Brookings. Respectfully, Dan Hamingson”

“Marcia and Family,
Nothing I can ever say can equal the wisdom, courage and commitment that your dear husband, father and grandfather lived every day of his life. He gave us all a standard we could only aspire to, but just as he "set the bar high", he was ALWAYS available to help any of us attain his demonstrated levels. No news to you and Dan's family that he was truly a unique man....leaving us all a "void" that WE will never attempt to fill - because it would be IMPOSSIBLE!

Peace and prayers be with all of you as Dan is granted a most deserved ETERNAL REST....

With heartfelt sympathy,
Dan Roepke”

“More than the blood of my blood. He is my friend, my rock...my brother.
Brother, in times of need, never judging, always there.
My Brother, could, would, always make things right.
Brother, never made much ado, about the task at hand...he just did it.
Brother, who lifted me, when I was down.
Brother, who brought the laughter, amid the pain.
Brother, the word he never spoke...was 'no'.
Brother, who had the answers, to my questions.
Brother, who by example, did walk the path of right.

Brother, in all my years...in all my life, never have I met another...like my loving brother.
