Megan J. Pappas
July 19, 1986 - January 30, 2016
From: Ames, IA | Originally: Nevada, IA

Our little Meggy (July 19, 1986—January 30, 2016) passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames due to a brain hemorrhage.

A Celebration of Megan’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, with Pastors Myron Herzberg and David Burling officiating.  Memorial visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 4-7 p.m.

Megan enjoyed sunny walks, tricycle rides with dad, and eating cookies.  She was especially fond of "cuddle time" with her mom and sisters and loved to have her back rubbed.  Megan resided at Friendship Ark Homes with her special friends Camille, Paul, Adam, Steve and numerous caregivers.

Megan was a member of Memorial Lutheran Church, Friendship Ark, and the Cornelia de Lange Foundation.  She is survived by her parents, Jim and Mary Pappas of Nevada; two sisters, Emily (Blake) Tiedtke of Cedar Rapids, and Jennifer (Mike) Johnson of Houston, TX; and her "dynamo" nephews, Banks, Abram, and Knox.

She was preceded in death by her Grandpa and Grandma Sprenger and Yiayia and Papou Pappas.

We would like to especially thank all of those many caregivers and others who invested their time and love into our Megan.

Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Megan and her family.

“Jim and Mary,

I just learned of Megan's passing. Megan was a spirited individual who brought many smiles to my face during our time together at AHS. I think of her often and the many life lessons I learned from her. Megan enjoyed back rubs and individual reading time. I think she enjoyed the attention and not the story which was fine by me. Megan was quick to let us know when we did not understand her and her ability to communicate was amazing. I will miss that beautiful smile and the cuddles we shared. ”

“We are so sorry for your loss and would like to extend our condolences. It is our sincere hope that you find comfort and peace in our most loving heavenly Father. In the Holy Scriptures at Isaiah 35:6 it says, "At that time the lame will leap like the deer, And the tongue of the speechless will shout for joy." Yes in the near future God will wipe out all tears, remove sickness and death, even restoring our lost loved ones back to life. Please, read John 5:25-29 and Revelation 21:3-5. With our deepest sympathy.”

Working with Megan and seeing your family at the house showed me what true love and compassion looked like. I remember Megan loving cuddles and back scratches. Her smile was infectious. I will miss her so much. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. ”

You were blessed with one of God's Angels while still on earth and in return you got to love her and she got to have you as her loving parents while here visiting. Blessings come in small packages and large ones too. We are praying for Megan and for you. God is with her now and you will see her again. Love and sympathy Mike and Page Crawford”

“Jim & Mary,

I had the pleasure to work with Megan when I worked at Friendahip Ark Homes and she was truly a blessing. She brought so much character and spunk to her house and everyone around her. I always loved when she would come over to me on the couch and want to snuggle or have her back rubbed. She was truly a blessing and thought be so much about myself. I was shocked and saddened by the news of Megs but I am reassure by knowing she is in a better place now watching down on all her family and friends. ”

“Jim and Mary,

I am writing up some thoughts and memories of Megan that I would like to give you in person. However, for now, this will do.

I have spent the last decade focusing on being independent, strong, and tough. I pushed away my sensitivities, my compassion, and my ability to really feel, open up, and get close to people. I viewed these things as a vulnerability, a weakness. As a result, I have not been too close to many people and have often isolated myself.

The first time I met Megan I felt intimidated. I had no experience with special needs when I came into this job and Megan intimidated me. However, in my first week of knowing her, I had a very distinct moment with her alone in her room (that I will elaborate on in the text I plan on writing for you both). I felt a real connection with her and learned I was able to communicate with her quite easily. In all of my traveling, I have found that my non-verbal relationships (due to language barriers) are actually far deeper and special than my relationships where I can yap away with someone. There is something about being in tune to the needs and feelings of someone through subtle cues, that is very special and requires a deeper connection.

Megan changed me. She brought out qualities in me that I believe are inherent to my persona, qualities I had pushed away for years. She made me a better person. I grew so much as a person through my interactions with Megan, through getting to know her, through trying to make her day a little more fun or better.

I respected Megan so much. We had a lot in common and I could see where she was coming from even in her most stubborn and difficult moments. She strived for independence. She knew what she wanted and would stop at nothing to get it. She did not like being stuck in a chair or being told what to do. Megan often had an aversion to authority. She was easily bored. These are all things I can relate to and I loved her for it!

I remember the first time Megan kissed me on the cheek and I remember all the times she kicked me in the face. Megan was endearing in her most stubborn moments as well as her most affectionate moments.

I have been in shock, I have been angry, and I have been hopelessly sad since this weekend. Her passing has weighed on me tremendously. My relationship with her was unique and special and cannot be replaced. My heart goes out to the both of you as I cannot imagine a more difficult and tragic situation.

I only knew Megan for six months. However, Megan has played a large role in me finding and being comfortable with the sensitive sides of myself that are much truer to my intrinsic nature then I ever wanted to admit. I was able to open up, get close to, and really feel for Megan. My relationship with her helped me realize I am able to do this with others. She has changed me in ways that no one else, not even myself, has ever been able to. I will love her forever that.

Love, Shea

I was attending a RS-Nevada bball game and learned of this sad news. Of course the memories of you caring, holding, and giving Megan unconditional love swarmed my thoughts. So many HS softball games were attended by Megan while she watched her stud sister Jennifer play ball. On the hottest of days Mary and Jim would be cuddling Megan. You gave her everything she needed. God bless Megan and may God bring peace to your hearts. ”

“Mary, Jim , and family,

Although Megan never spoke to me, she taught me so much. I can never describe our relationship. There truly is no label for it. I will miss her terribly. Friday afternoon, her and I had a wonderful time bowling and snacking ( by the way we won!!). And she smiled and gave me some love taps. I am so glad we spent that afternoon together. I am so thankful that I got to spend three blessed years with your wonderful daughter. I can't express how much I loved Megan and everything she gave me. What a wonderful and feisty soul. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Mary and Jim : you have set an amazing example for parents everywhere. I have learned so much from you both and admired your dedication to your daughter from afar. Please know that you and Megan have impacted my life greatly.
